Why am I Single?

Oh, February how you remind us of our relationship status. As a lady who has been a single lady a majority of valentines days I can most definitely relate to it being the world’s most depressing holiday. You get to walk through a month full of couples celebrating their love for one another. All of them from the ones dating for a week to those who have been in love for years.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN BEING SINGLE IS GOOD!
February 14th was such a thrilling day for me. Yeah there were couples everywhere but you don’t need a significant other to recognize that you are loved. I got to write cheesy valentines, I got a flower from a friend, I read Song of Solomon, and I got to hang out with friends! Basically it was a rockin’ day.
Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.
Song of Solomon, the book that encompasses love. I’m gonna rephrase that, the book that describes the feeling of romantic love. The Bible is a book all about love. God created us to be in relationship. That’s something the church society tells us often and we mentally put that in the framework of relationships between friends, family, and hearing this we think of being created for a romantic relationship.
Wrong! While God blesses us with friends, family, or even a special someone when we’ve been created in relationship that is a relationship with him. Our Creator desires for us to be near to him and live in relationship with him. Often when we hear relationship the sermons that follow are either about marriage or about living in community.
Follow the advice in Song of Solomon and “do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.” In 1 Corinthians 13:4 the first thing we are told is that love is patient. Your singleness has a purpose! More than anything we must remember that love is an action not an emotion. The Bible doesn’t tell us that we will fall in love but commands us to live in love.
Let’s explore how we should act as single people. Often it’s easy to wonder how we should act when we are single. Should I be asking every cute, humorous, and christian guy out? Should I just sit here and wait until God drops me into my future husband’s hands? Should I be I wearing a purity ring, or does it look too much like a wedding ring?
Open your bibles y’all to 1 Corinthians 7:25-40, y’all these are quite the verses. Here we are told that it is best for all of us to remain single. My reaction to this is I little bit of a freakout. Honestly I scream inside and wonder how that can possibly be true especially when I see people in love and desire to be in love. After all Psalm 37:4 says that I will be given the desires of my heart which is obviously to be in love. So why am I single? Let’s actually take a look at the verse, it states “delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” That is what Paul is talking to us about in 1 Corinthians. It is easier to live fully consumed by Christ when he is all we have to focus on. As we are called to delight ourselves in the Lord we are urged to not awaken love until the Lord gives us the desires of our hearts.
This is much easier said than done, fully rely on Christ. It is our foundational answer as we start this series on relationships. Y’all are loved! Live fearlessly!!
