Me, Myself, and I

Here is something you probably don't want to hear: You are selfish. Even in the most wonderful time of year, where the world is focusing on giving gifts, you are selfish. No one admires that quality but everyone has it in abundance.

We go through our days and thoughts usual surround us. Wakes up and checks your phone thinking "I wonder who wants to talk to me." Gets out of bed to look in the mirror "Oh wow I look rough today." Tries on a thousand outfits aiming for one that will get the most compliments. Later that day you ask a friend "How are you doing?" then just sits there contemplating all that is wrong in your own life, as you just look at them instead of listening. The day goes on; then the days turn into months where your focus doesn't adjust and everything that is done involves you.

As time moves forward, we become more and more selfish. Everything we do is all about the like on Instagram, the comment on Facebook, or the retweet. What if your selfless moments couldn't be posted about? What if you can't prove to anyone that you are selfless? It's hard to accept that you will always be a work in progress but you aren't Jesus, so embrace it. Even selfless acts can be seen or feel selfish because they feel good and they strengthen relationships.

Ultimately John 5:30 is our measure of being selfless, "I can do nothing on my own initiative. Just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who sent me." This life will never be about you so stop focusing on yourself. Pay attention to the unnoticed. Open your eyes to the lonely. Listen to those hurting.

The most surprising part, you will benefit more from selflessness, but we rarely stick with it because it is too difficult to do the hard or uncomfortable thing, even in our own family units or friend groups.

Nobody is perfect, except for Jesus, so let's do this thing with Him, not just for Him. You can't be selfless by your self.

So, as you go through this Christmas week, look for the best ways to serve others and be selfless. Don't just focus on you. Focus on God and what he did for you and how you can show that love to others best.
